Yes this excellent movie is about race and reflects how black people had to ensure terribly racist attitudes.
But this movie is also about class. How intelligent, capable but less educated people from the lower classes had to struggle against social norms and privelege to try to step up - one step - maybe two.
My parents grew up in 1920's Ireland where children didn't even have shoes and wealthy landowners could throw a whole family into the street if they couldn't afford the rent.
My grandparents stepped up,just a little. My parents, one more step.
That's what I feel this movie encapsulates.
That and the fact that whichever system people exist in, some try to keep you down, some are learning and there is always kindness from some.
