A dark and deeply disturbing film about a family dealing with mysterious happenings and loss. The cast is stellar. The subdued, agonizingly slow and plodding opening builds nicely for the first real scare. But nothing is as it seems. Madness seems to be the cause of the problems, but a close watching will have viewers wondering if there aren't more nefarious activities under way. Toni Collett and Gabriel Byrne are good, but their children are the real focus of this horror movie.
This is not Paranormal Activity. The music, the excellent filming and transitions from day to night and the underlying mystery provide a deeply scary film that will haunt your dreams. This isn't jumpscare central as is so popular, today. This also isn't Eli Roth gore porn. This is a handsomely made film with terror and a surprise dark ending that will have you guessing all the way to the credits.
