I don’t want to take any credit away from all the people involved in making this movie happen. They all did an incredible job to deliver the stunning movie. My only issue was the plot: it felt like nothing but “necessary” information cramped into 3 hours to setup for a third movie.
My biggest issue was that it was depressing. basically from the moment the “sky people” were reintroduced, we were immediately shown how great of a threat they are. This felt very overstated as they effortlessly tore through everything each time they made an appearance.
What this did for me was take away from all the sub plots. Any happy moments between the main characters was vastly overshadowed by the ticking time bomb that was the inevitable run-in with the sky people.
For quite a long time I found myself in a state of “I get it, there’s no way the avatar can win. So what’s the surprise, what will help turn things around?” and when the climax occurred, they only won because the sky people were in unfamiliar ground with limited resources. Why did they bother showing the mass “industrialization” and creation of their base if they only use one tenth of their resources in the climax? To setup for a third movie. Which brings me to my conclusion.
The movie felt like an unnecessary bridge between the first and third movie. In the first Avatar, the introduction of the avatar world was spot on. There was just enough detail without it dragging on or leaving any confusion. In the second movie that approach was thrown out out the door. The entire movie ended up as a setup for the theme, setting, and the relationship between the main characters. Sure, once the third movie comes we’ll know very well about the love-hate relationship between Tarzan and the Villain, but was wasting a whole movie on building characters worth it? No. It wasn’t.
