This game has something for everyone. No, really. If you like something story-driven like a standalone Final Fantasy, you will enjoy this game (barring the slog in ARR, but it pays off later, I promise). If you like more casual dungeon-raiding and playing with friends, there is something for you. If you like hardcore raiding solo or with groups, there are in-game social resources for that also. If crafting and gathering is your thing, there are plenty of avenues and jobs for that. If you like mini games, grind at the Gold Saucer for cool rewards. There is plenty of side content apart from the main story, with tons of optional quests and dungeons/raids in nearly every area.
I hear some people criticize player rotations for being too easy, but it truly depends on job class. I play multiple classes and some jobs have a much higher skill ceiling than others; even minor mistakes can be very punishing in higher-level content, depending on your class. Customization IS limited -- no materia combos or sphere grid paths here. You have item levels and one or two materia slots on some gear. The game can seem hand-holdy, but I consider them mostly to be quality-of-life enhancements.
The soundtrack is great, as per usual with FF games, with lots of variety between areas and dungeons. If you have played all the other FF games, you will notice some familiar tunes thrown in. In general, there are a lot of typical FF themes and familiar characters and monsters.
The game is beautiful. I think character-wise, there could be more variety in terms of aesthetics, and the glamour system needs a rework. The UI in some instances is not very intuitive. Playing with a controller can be painful at first, but I think in combat it's easier in most cases.
Last, the community is the least toxic I've come across. I've encountered one minor toxic player and that's even barely worth mentioning.
