For 70+ years, I have been an avid reader, which means I have read a lot of books in my life! One Track Mind is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. It takes the reader inside the mind of an ultrarunner—a term I didn’t even know before I picked up the book. The subtitle tells it all: “What running 150 miles in a day can teach you about life.” One Track Mind reveals how one man prepared for, endured, and ultimately completed a 24-hour race during which he ran 154 miles—IN THE RAIN! And lest you expect that Michael Stocks was a young man when he accomplished this feat, I will tell you he was 49 years old when he ran this race that qualified him to run for Great Britain. The mechanics of ultrarunning are interesting, and Stocks documents this aspect well. He also offers his philosophy on living vs. existing, positive thinking, the importance of a support team, how one defines one’s identity, and so much more. Overall, a wonderful read! I recommend it highly.
