The heartbeat of Flanagan's The Haunting of Bly Manor is its theme, like most of his works. While Hill House(one of my best series) showed that it is we who haunt us, Bly Manor believes our lovers and loved ones do so. The ghost is the memory, which the characters sometimes 'get tucked away' or sometimes visit endlessly. It is also a look at the afterlife, with hell embodied in relentless reliving of painful memories: an eternal purgatory.
The relationships are the highest peaks of this series, tender in a way that leaves your heart warm and aching. 'It's a love story not a ghost story'. Scares you less, tears you up more. In all, it's 'perfectly splendid'. Almost recreating the similar cast has been another toast to the team.
