Uneven editing, nightmare sequences unnecessarily confusing, too many characters not central to the plot. Del Toro made movie worth watching.

Excellent performances by Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Mackie as an homeless couple who come together by circumstance and ultimately love one another and try to help each other survive. It is, I think, a realistic portrayal of the plight of the homeless in America.

This movie was made 2 decades ago. At the time, it merited its 53% Rotten Tomatoes. But today, the tomato has become corn. However, Michelle Pfeiffer is stunning, even soaking wet, which she was for much of the movie. Harrison Ford was recruited for the movie by being told he was playing the romantic lead for Pfeiffer. The producer neglected to tell him his role was to [spoiler coming up ——————————] drown her. Glug, glug.

The lush scenery helps relieve the wooden dialogue, but the plot’s implausibility requires sterner stuff to overcome.

A spectacular feat of writing, acting, and cinematography. Mysterious, poignant, provocative, funny, irreverent. Seriously great TV.
