There was an uneasiness to watching this film...foreboding and heavy at times....which grew more uncomfortable occasionally by a soundtrack which at moments could only be compared to a child randomly pounding on a piano. All of which seemed to be quite intentional to create just such an emotional reaction among the viewers. It took you in...and just as easily pulled you down into his own despair. Of course, much about his life was tumultuous and uneasy, and so to me it was only fitting that viewing the film about this troubled soul touched upon such emotions. Not always easy to watch...but that is mostly due to the subject matter...not so much the film making. It's a must see for true Van Gogh and/or Willem Dafoe fans....just don't go in expecting a warm, fuzzy experience.
