Right.
I can see that this might not be for everybody, but to my mind it's one of THE BEST DOCUMENTARY SERIES I HAVE EVER WATCHED. The subject does, I concede, coincide with my interests, so I was well-disposed towards it from the outset; but over three episodes one was given an efficient guided tour of the archaeology of script, of alphabetical development, of different pictogrammatical varieties, of the evolution of writing, of the political significance of printing, of the serendipity of type-requirements, of the economy of paper-production, of the aesthetics of calligraphy. of the future consequences of internet technologies. There was so much in it which was revelatory (to me!), and a lot of the revelations were indicative of The Human Condition. The programme was well presented, the illustrations were relevant and interesting (as were the locations), AND I DID NOT FEEL TREATED LIKE AN IDIOT! So many documentaries eke out information, and aim at some sort of lowest common denominator (I refer to the recent Brian Cox astronomical effort, which bored me into turning off after about ten minutes). THIS WAS GOOD, bloody well done the Beeb.
