Externals started with a long exposition with little intrigue. The acting at times was sub-par, and dragged in the emotional scenes. The humor was often unfocused, but there were a few jokes that landed. It went on for far too long and the ensemble cast was too large to get to know every single character the same amount as intended by the screenwriters and directors. The CGI was beautiful and very unique. There are great screen grabs, but not many that grabbed my attention as they should have.
As a life-long Marvel fan, I don’t prefer the new direction they have taken because it broadens the scope of the universe too wide, and they made the idea of superheroes lose the meaningfulness and empowerment to the individual. When watching these god-like figures, I don’t see myself in them, and they lost my interest and passion towards their goals.
Overall, this movie is entertaining at points, but it seems like the cast and crew were a bit over their heads when it came to broadening this already extremely complex world and universe. By the next movie, hopefully the director and writers will realize that true story telling doesn’t have to take two and a half hours. This will only happen when they learn what was completely unnecessary within this initial film.
