I took a 4 year old boy to see this movie and saw the most amazing thing: for the first time, I watched him expresss empathy. The movie retells the story of Dumbo as I remember it. It's interesting to watch this newer version with and FOR the next generation. Movies like these are contributors to his emotional development. Most of the time, young children are usually thinking of themselves. I learned there's so much more to this little boy and that he is capable of empathy. For the negative headlines from critics I've skimmed by so far: let's not think of ourselves as we write how Dumbo is recieved in ourselves, but also for our children. We need more stories like this: heartbreaking yet hopeful, with a touch of nostalgia.
