I have now played, and lost, two games. The first time, the screen said “Victory” and immediately afterwards “Defeat”. It was a fitting metaphor for what Firaxis have achieved.
The last time I played Civilization it had got to version 3. I loved the game. Now I am confused by and strongly dislike its separate ages and its tangle of legacy paths and victory conditions. God only knows what needs to be done with religions. I have no idea what steps I could have taken to stop my opponents winning as I received no useful information about my rivals as I played. In one game, I failed an economic path because despite having an abundance of resources to meet the “slot in 14 resources” goal I could find no information about how to add resource slots to my settlements.
It is dreary being funnelled into pre-determined tasks that turn play into a continual balancing act in order to please a game that sets the rules, then coyly refuses to tell you how to satisfy them. I don’t want to jump through pre-placed hoops up to the next pre-determined step and onwards to the prize. It is not what I expected and not what I want. Civilization 7 will sit there on my PC unplayed from now on while I wait to see what Firaxis decide to do, because at the moment, they have animated their lumbering creation with the soul of a platform game.
And it now crashes every time I exit it. Maybe that’s its way of telling me it doesn’t want me back.
