Compared to new Barbie movies, this one's unique. The friend characters have more personality, and though it is a bit gimmicky, it's great to see for once that Barbie isn't so completely elevated above them, not so special compared to them. Aramina is my personal favourite, with her genuine and quirky personality and love of poetry and roses (such a pretty aesthetic!).
A thing I love from this movie is its feminism message. It can be a bit on-the-nose with the discrimination (which as a kid's film, it makes sense), but it also catches you completely off-guard with (SPOILERS) even the supposed love interest, the Prince, turning out to be a bit of a sexist jerk! It's genuinely shocking when they're having a beautiful moment in the hot air balloon and you're starting to see some sparks fly, he's sharing his dreams, which he wants to persue despite others' doubts, just like her, so she reveals her hopes to become a musketeer, and then the Prince literally makes fun of Barbie's dream (even though he was just saved by her)! It feels so natural, maybe even more so than him banding up with her to help her become a musketeer, and only makes it sweeter when she's able to prove everyone wrong, along with her three friends.
