It wasn't Star Wars. It was somebody using Star Wars theme to give their own opinion and worldview, which made the movie into a mess. There was no logical explanation for any of the character actions or plot, itself. If they wanted to express or explore their ideas, they should take their own mythos and ideas. Don't hijack somebody else's. That's a cornball move.
It was reminiscent of Pirates of the Caribbean by having a small band of people running out of gas - literally, out of gas - while running away from a couple of Space Ball bad guys. Only to be interrupted by a scene from the 5th Element that turned out to be completely pointless. The main lead wasn't the lead. Rather a couple intro characters took the more heroic scenes. The writers don't understand the lore or didn't care. They based it purely on good versus evil and treated that paradigm as a 5 year old would. There is so much that can be taken apart, but that would take a year with this movie.
Supporters of this film say Rey's parents were nobody so that anybody can be special, and that's the movie's virtue. It's not. It's Disney making headway for a cash cow by making a plethora of movies. There's no respect for good story telling, but mostly corporate cynicism thinking the masses are, too, stupid to know any better.
It is a wonder, however, how the Disney executives are willing to risk potential profit gains in order to interject political commentary where it warped the story so much it sent their leading female to be more of a subplot character. Or, how General Phasma was killed off in the most emptiest way within a couple of minutes of appearing. They sacrificed merch. From a non-conspiratorial perspective, I guess, they're going to short their investments; otherwise, internet conspiracy theorists will have truth on their side. It was a long drawn out conscience decision.
Personally, I'm weighing if I should even watch these movies - Disney, even Marvel, which is starting to get, or has been, bland. Why should I give my money to somebody who is only going to laugh at me and preach to me that I'm in the way of (their) Progress? I love movies, but with a scalpel the beauty is being ripped away by alchemists until the soul has vacated the work and the heart eaten. These movies are nothing but plastic and are the very robots that people fear that would one day become self-aware. There is no more art just Progression.
