Artifishal has the dubious distinction of drawing the wrath of scientists, fisheries managers and tribes for its gross misrepresentation of hatcheries and in-river salmon management on the West Coast. Pacific NW Tribes have taken to offering free patches for owners of Patagonia (Artifishal's producer) products to sew over the company logo in protest of the company and the film's bait and switch treatment of tribal subjects in the film. Scientists bemoan the film's broadbrush condemnation of hatcheries using cherry picked outdated research and management practices of yesteryear.
Environmental advocacy films occupy a niche market with their tendency to speak to an urban choir as a vehicle to peddle brand X microbrew and outdoor clothing. There are calls for Patagonia to remove Artifishal from circulation but its likely to continue popping up to fulfill its true purpose...$$.
