marred by stereotypes, 2nd rate/ jarring/ impossible CGI images, muddled relationships, unclear resolutions to conflict. Not an awful movie but as a mudslide overtakes the interior of the hotel, it seemed 2 dimensional, unconvincing and almost 20th century. "I'm this guy! No, I'm just posing, I'm the creepy bad guy! OK I'm the good guy after all!" OH PLEASE! The idea of the creepy hotel is always worth trotting out as is the back story, but the execution left me cold. As did the character of the arch villainess.

Wonderful. I'd watch language goofs like "no way" which is seventies- but NINETEEN seventies- and "skew me" (3x?) for "excuse me" by Saoirse Ronan who otherwise is a very good actor. Totally heart warming, family friendly, feminist, sentimental, well done, lovable movie. Meryl Streep is magnificent as always and Laura Dern my new hero. The flashbacks are a bit discombobulating, as you don't know immediately if they are "today" or "back then" and who was where. Otherwise, fantastic and I am a real stickler!
