Challenging on so many levels , this novel ranks highly in the annals of war ,love ,relationships . It sometimes confuses and at the same time illuminates in the same sentence .
Mr Flanagan's ability to arouse anger at and sympathy towards some of the players in the book is a little disturbing at times , demanding a modicum of introspection which ,for me , is one of the hallmarks of a " good " read . There are passages in The Road to The Deep North that made me question who is good ,bad ,evil ,loyal , true , in situations and circumstances that the reader can only imagine . I will have to read this one again .
