I'm only about a 3rd of the way through and doubting whether I'll finish it. Some minor spoilers: There is little to differentiate the protagonists in each century and if the Chapters didn't reveal which characters in the title, I would have struggled to tell them apart. Two annoyances straight away about Batchelor Alf is his use of the term "snickers" (no British person would ever call them anything but "trainers") and that on his introduction we have him described as "a fifty something " only to find out a few pages later that he's been married for 40 years! Disappointed.
