I have to saying this movie for me was hard to watch! Growing up in a similar situation myself! In the areas they spoke about! I wasn't born there! But, I was raised there meaning from the age of about 4 years give or take a few months! My parents, moved back to the area of Wva, Kentucky and Ohio! Growing up we called it the Tri-State area! In the 70's and 80's
I grew up very similar to JD! Only difference's were the fact my mom didn't end up in drugs!
But, her mental state was another story! Yes, I would run to my mamaw and pawpaw!! From all the mental and some physical abuse! In those days we didn't know that's what it was!! Not like today, when you can't even whip your kid, for fear of them calling the law!
My family was as dysfunctional as any family could be! Alcohol and drugs! No Real jobs! All the plants closing down, the surrounding areas depending on steel and coal!
This went on through my high school years as well, until running away a few times and my maw coming to get me! Till I finally made it out if high school trying to go in the Air Force, didn't happen! ( Longer story)!
Ended up working no where job's, till my mom was transferred to Maryland with her job!
She kept sending me help wanted news papers from there, so when I had enough being stuck in no where's ville! I went to Maryland and got a job!
It was hard! Cost of living, n not being used to it! Major culture shock!
Well, over the years ended married having two beautiful daughters! Then divorced, but having my daughter's has kept me going!
Honestly, sorry to get side tracked on my story! But wanted someone to know, how hard it ended being for me to watch this movie!!
It brought back a flood of memories!! I actually turned it off 3/4 the way through! Just bc of how overwhelmed I started feeling!
Reminder's of things I thought I'd never remember!
I can say though that this movie is pretty much right on when it came to living down in that area!
The portraits the actor's gave were very accurate!
This movie isn't for everyone! But, for those of us that grew up in the area it's a lot!!
Thank you!
