The switch back to JJ Abrams saw him say. “I don’t give a flying fruitcake about episode 8 and all the possibilities it opened up to take this thing into a new direction, I’m going to stick back to the same old, boring, safe formula” and boy did it show. The movie was super disjointed from the earlier ones and then tried to cram scene after scene of action down our throats. What that meant was there was zero time for character development and even worse there was a whole bunch of new characters and story threads introduced that were obviously a set up for new franchise spin offs and merchandising opportunities. There were a whole bunch of references to ep 4-6 which was nice however as the thing was so crammed it added even more bloat. After episodes 7 and 8 I was so pumped but this was a huge disappointment. They could have done something great but instead we got a script written by a six year old who was told he has five minutes to grab as much candy from the shelves as possible before the store closes.
