Just like every zombie or related movie. The story is constantly progressed because people are idiots, cannot use a weapon and somehow still survive even though they are too scared or inept to make sound survival based decisions. Realistically, EVERYONE would know to take a zombie out by the head. Even in a zombie movie world, before things got bad, they would have had zombie movies to teach them.
