Very surprised at the negative feedback this film is getting. Especially on IMDB which is generally where i look to for unbias reviews.
Alex Garland has definitely outdone himself with this. In my oppinion it's even better than Ex Machina.
I've got nothing against Denis Villeneuve, but i think Garland is the only director trying to do something different and more interesting with his sci fi flicks. Philosophical questions, a plot that is not overly revealed through exposition, and a solid creepy vibe makes this a pretty solid 8.5/10 for me.
I loved the cast, and i loved even more how it didn't market itself as being an 'all female cast' like so many films do these days to tokenise 'minorities'. It just had an all female cast, and it made sense in relation to the story, and that was great. Normalising it rather than needing to virtue signal.
Great special effects, very spooky and unsettling. Great soundtrack (especially at the end). Very thought provoking. Reminded me of a bizzaro Stalker except it had more of a pay off at the end.
I'm guessing people don't rate it cause it doesn't spoon feed you like so many other movies do these days but if you're looking for an intellectual sci-fi film that's beautifully shot this is for you.
PS i know nothing about science so this wasn't an issue for me but if you want to watch scientifically grounded sci fi films prepare to be bored. Unless it's the Andromeda Strain or Phase IV
