I'm a big fan of the Artemis Fowl book series. When I heard the movie was coming out, I was so excited and could not wait. When I finally got to watch it, I was sorely disappointed. 9/10 parts of this movie NEVER happened in the book series. Most of the characters seem so wrong.
The first time Artemis is seen is him surfing. Artemis has very little physical ability in the books. If he ever tried to surf, he would get seriously injured. Part of what makes Artemis a memorable character is that he's a genius criminal who can hack and steal art. He's also remembered by fans of the book to almost always be wearing a suit. Artemis HATES things that make him seem like a normal kid, especially jeans and t-shirts.
Holly was similar to the original character but is confusing. She's supposed to hate Artemis until he gets punched twice, arrested once, and he helps her stop Opal Kaboi.
My frustration with commander Root is that he is not a she and he turns the color of beet root when mad. He's hard on Holly because he cares like a fatherly figure.
Juliet is supposed to be 4 years older than Artemis. She is also supposed to be taking care of Angelina Fowl, who has disappeared from the movie. Juliet is also supposed to be more obsessed with wrestling than she was in the movie.
I could go on about what was wrong, but my point is that this movie felt like a different story inspired by Artemis Fowl. The movie is something I believe many fans won't like. When it comes to those who don't know the books, though, it's an ok movie for families. It would be useful for passing the time.
One thing I will say, though, is that I had a lot of fun yelling, correcting mentally, and jokingly ridiculing the movie.
