It’s so bad. Like, so bad. I never write reviews for shows, but I couldn’t help it with this one. My husband and I had high hopes. It has some TV actors that we usually really like. However, the plot was strange and fragmented, like they had taken every concept from every sci-if/space movie ever and just smushed it all together.
Just to make it more realistic and believable, the crew of the ship was full of angsty, immature characters in their early-twenties. The drama and relationships were shallow, and there was little to no character development. The only character explored deeper was the main character, Niko, who is struggling with the difficult decisions of her past, and whether to choose her family over her career and crew (also highly original content). Her behavior was predictable, dense, and boring. She had no interesting qualities to make her likable. Otherwise, there are just a bunch of very two-dimensional characters, plus a few random people to pop out of the soma-sleep in order to help them with a task.
It’s very difficult to follow. Not because it’s complicated or advanced, but because it constantly jumps around. ***Spoiler Alert*** One of the most initially interesting characters was killed off almost immediately.
Actors that I normally like, including Selma Blair, played vapid, annoying characters. The behavior of each and every character was odd and unnatural. The only slightly believable actor was the one playing Niko’s child, Jana. She did great despite a terrible plot.
All-in-all, we still watched the entire train wreck. I’m sure lots of people will watch it, and some will maybe even enjoy it. If we hadn’t had high-expectations, maybe we would have enjoyed it more. But we have come to expect more from Netflix, and certainly more from some of the headlining character actors. It just didn’t hit the mark, or even get close to it, for a high-quality science fiction series on Netflix. It could have been really interesting, but alas, it just wasn’t.
