Git gud? Perhaps this game should take its own advice. Take a Souls-Borne game, strip it of all its RPG elements, insert a underpowered prosthetic arm, and add a skill tree and you have Sekiro - without most of what made those other games good.
I was actually enjoying this game up until about Hirata Estates. At that point, I wondered - why am I fighting giant roosters? Then I realized that I hated this game. As I continued on into the game, eventually getting to the serpent - I realized that I was just basically playing the same level over and over. All the temples look the same. All the mountains look the same. All the shingles look the same. All the rivers look the same. In Dark Souls and Bloodborne, I was interested to get to the next level and see what different enemies or architecture I might encounter. In this, it's just more of the same Japanese pagodas - which gets old fast.
A major flaw is that one of the early boss fights forces - yes literally forces you to lose to him to further the story of the prosthetic arm. Why am I battling or fighting a guy that it is rigged that I will lose in order to further the story? Infuriating to say the least. Just massive disrespect and punishment against players for no reason. I really don't understand why people are saying this game is "rewarding" and I have to believe they are either trolls or are being paid by From Software to go around posting positive reviews like this. If you do manage to defeat one of the bosses, you don't get much for it. You don't get rewarded. And if you do, Sekiro will find a way to take it away. For example, I won myself a few Gourd Seeds and managed to get more health refills. However, now the game just throws that many more enemies at me, so by the time I get from the Shrine to one of the big bosses wanted to battle - I lost those extra refills on the journey there.
So what was the freakin point of beating those other minibosses and earning Gourd Seeds? It was pointless! Thanks From Software! Are these people saying this game is rewarding freakin idiots?
I really wanted to like this game and for a few hours I did. Until I figured out that the RPG elements were gone for gud and there was a skill tree instead. (I later came to find that there are a few RPG elements - reduced to just power of attack and vitality. However, after quite a long time, I still haven't found the four prayer beads to actually advance either of those) It is very easy to get stuck in this game and not be able to progress any further without defeating some of these bosses and I really don't understand why people think the combat in this game is so good. I found that the parry often did not work.
To me, this is just an overrated game that has too many faults to the point I was asking myself why From Software even released this game. Oh right. They didn't - right? Didn't Activision pick up this title and release it? Didn't they know there would be massive backlash? I'm guessing they did and I strongly suspect the ratings for this game were fluffed in some way. This game is simply indefensibly bad.
If you want to enjoy the games you play, I'd recommend Divinity Original Sin 2. The game is so much more fun than this horrible mess. Or pick up Nioh if you are really into those asian style fighting games. That was so much more fun to me than this.
I get the feeling that some of these players that claim to enjoy this game never played original Dark Souls. Or Bloodborne. Yes, the whole idea may seem interesting to them and great, but it is as if they don't really understand that those games were so much better than this in many ways and don't understand the disappointment.
This game is clearly not a 9. Perhaps, and I am being generous here, a 6. Sorry, this game was the first game in a long time that needed to be traded in.
