At first, I wasn’t sure if I liked the show or I hated it. Some plot points were intriguing, and some twists definitely stirred my curiosity, but I hated how the whole thing was written. To be honest, it felt like the whole Sherlock Holmes narrative was inserted just so that the series would attract enough viewers. The writers could have named Watson and Sherlock as Clark and Kent and it wouldn’t have changed anything in the series. I’ve watched and read a number of Sherlock Holmes spin-offs, and I must say that this is at the bottom of my list.
It’s also annoying how we don’t get much background on the Irregulars themselves (how they ended up together, etc.) They’re just together, and we don’t even know why they’re together in the first place. We’re just supposed to accept that this band of misfits are together and that’s that.
Honestly, the plot looked promising, but it was poorly executed. Some scenes were cut so abruptly that it would give you a headache. I also hated how Bea’s character was written. She’s supposed to be their leader but just seemed angry all the time, and there wasn’t anything special about her at all. You’d think that in Jack and the Beanstalk situations or David and Goliath situations, the smaller character would at least have a special skill that would help her get out of the situation. She could have at least been wittier or more skilled in other area, but no. There was nothing different about her. At least the other characters had something going for them.
In all fairness, I applaud the casting director for casting actors and actresses from diverse backgrounds. The actors and actresses were good and did their job well. The people behind this film could have done a better job of executing such a nice idea, and it’s a shame that the actors and actresses’ talents were wasted on such an awful series.
