This is a visual novel style dungeon crawler that has twists, turns and multiple play through options that can lead to numerous endings much like its predecessor, Chrono Trigger. This game is an important step towards understanding the dimensional link between the realm of Chrono Trigger's Guardia and Chrono Cross's Home World. Since this series heavily involves time travel and dimensional warping it can become convoluted if you don't pay close enough attention.
While it's not your average run-of-the-mill direct sequel in generic terms, it helps the player understand how these dimensions intertwine (primarily between Lucca and Kid) and provides additional information in regards to Magus (aka "Magil"), Lucca, the Chrono Trigger stone, and this new character "Kid" (as well as the new protagonist Serge). If you're a fan of Chrono Trigger and plan on playing Chrono Cross, I highly recommend giving this a playthrough or two because it will help prime you for the sequel Chrono Cross.
