Wikipedia has categorised this movie as science fiction which shows how many people, including the editors at Wikipedia, do not understand this movie. It’s not a science fiction but rather a heartbreaking movie about mental illness. It shows how vivid and powerful the dilusions of a person suffering from schizophrenia can be. It is said that 90% of the people suffering from schizophrenia do not believe they are ill and this movie gives insight as to why by taking us inside the head of a character that has schizophrenia. The movie affected me doubly because a close relative of mine suffers from dilusions and I never seem to fully grasp why they are so reluctant to believe they need help - this movie gave me so much insight and at the same time broke my heart a little. Doctors often tell us that it’s important to treat a person with mental health with dignity, respect and kindness. But, when you are dealing with someone who has mental illness and is difficult to handle because they believe their hallucinations are real, it’s often very hard to sympathise with them because you just want them to behave and you yourself lack insight as to what that person is actually going through. This movie really does a fantastic job at showing us the world from a perspective of a man suffering from schizophrenia and really helps one understand him/them better.
