What you neglected to discuss in talking to Ms. Abramson, Mr. Stelter, is that English teachers are not teaching the difference between fact and opinion any longer; hence, writers fail to make that distinction. Gone are the days when teachers taught the art and science of research, complete with discussions of direct quotations and paraphrases, both of which need citations, and facts, those pieces of information universally accepted as true. Retired English teachers like me, who stayed up nights evaluating the various parts of the research process which led students to produce magnificent papers, some of which went to freshman English composition classes to receive very high praise, bridle at the lack of care and concern for what passes for research!
