Brightburn lacked a clear direction. Why did he come to earth? Where did he come from? Why earth and not another place? Brightburn reminds me of when I taught middle school. Kids reach puberty and lose their minds. The parents are in denial, especially the mother when clearly her sweet little angel has gone rogue and everybody can see it but the parents. However, what exactly is the back story? The child's demeanor was never normal. In the real world, that boy would have been observed by the classroom teacher, the parents would have been called in, the psychologist would have evaluated him and he wouldn't have gotten that far unless the parents refused the evaluation. Also, wouldn't doctors visits have revealed he was different? Did the school allow him to attend without immunizations? There should always be some connection to reality in a story. Even entertainment needs to have some identifiable reference to the real world.
