I honestly find it an honour to write the first review. I’m deeply moved by this book... It isn’t that surprising that not many has read it. I wouldn’t have even come across this if it weren’t for a booktuber. And when I decided to give it a shot, to get out of the slump I was in, I was pleasantly surprised. The book is profound yet lighthearted, complicated yet so simple. It revolves around different times and different people who come together in unexpected ways in supernatural circumstances. I’m really not doing this book any justice. To put it simply, three guys or delinquents I might say, wind up in an old dilapidated General store one night. And they begin to receive letters seeking their advice. The guys were confused at first but decided to write back, as that seemed the tradition of the General store. Only later did they come to realize that these letters were from the past. And as the night unravels, we get a close look at the lives of many people who were somehow affected by these letters.
There is a Japanese movie, and to quote every bookworms on planet earth, “the book is better than the movie”. I wouldn’t say the movie is terrible. And if you are so not a book person, I suggest you still read this book. And keep the movie as a last resort. The Japanese movie did cut a couple of stories and events. I have no idea about the Chinese version as of yet.
Hope this helped
