I hate judging a show on one episode, but coming from a flight attendant, I can’t stand the stereotypes this show promotes.
You have three flight attendants who are women and the one man who is a flight attendant is gay. Understand that I have no issue with one’s sexuality, but the show is promoting the stereotype that if you’re a male flight attendant, you must be homosexual.
As the episode progresses, it also portrays women flight attendants as promiscuous. Whether it’s the first class passenger Cassie makes out with in the lavatory, the man she spends a night with, or the pilot’s attempts to hook up with her, it leaves a bad impression to those outside the industry that pilots and flight attendants are their own Bumble or Tinder, full of hook-up culture and making it even harder for us to find a significant other than the already difficult to explain idea of being away for 3-4 days a week.
Lastly, I can’t stand how the show portrays Cassie as being a borderline alcoholic, and working while under the influence. Contrary to popular belief, our position is one of paramount safety. I understand the majority of the public doesn’t respect flight attendants in the same light as pilots, but our number one priority is to ensure you’re protected from the moment you board until the moment you deplane. You don’t see us in training and I hope none of you see our training in action. I also hope all you ever see us do is pass you a snack and drink, and you can continue to look at us as sky waiters and waitresses.
With that said, I do like how the show has incorporated Alex into helping Cassie figure out what happened the night they were together. I feel that is the strongest creative point so far. I felt like the stereotypes knock it down to one star, but the creativity of how they partner Alex and Cassie to piece the puzzle together is worth a second star.
I feel that this show has four or five star potential, but that relies on proper twists and turns, and also showing the viewer things they don’t know about the industry, and hopefully will educate them on the realities of what it’s like in the daily life of working as a flight attendant. And believe me, I’ve seen so much from a child’s joy of flying to Disney World to the heartbreak of a man visiting a loved one who passed away to a newlywed couple in first class starting their life together. It’s a career I have fallen in love with, and it’s the job that I never knew was my dream! Now that it’s in my blood, I can’t imagine doing anything else for a career!
