If you'd like a mix of Cave Story and Super Mario Bros., this game may be for you. This game is amazing and engrossing, and will run you plenty of time as long as you stutter a bit on the harder stages. Trust me, you will. In spirit, it is very "Studio Pixel-esque", with charming characters and a fun, fitting English translation by Playism. I'll spare you the details, but some cat with a PhD decided to give this frog a gun to save their beloved boss from stress... in a black, cloud-shaped (and quite violent) infectious form. Quite fun, give it a try!
