I don't think I deserves the praise it receives. As an athiest, I believe that religions shouldn't turn a "true story" into a shoehorned in message about God. Just tell the story. None of the "interventions of God" could've actually happened in real life. Although it is inspiring and powerful at various points, it isn't enough to carry it in the wake of in-your-face Christianity.
P.S. The pastor is played the same dude who prayed for God to kill Spider-Man in Spider-Man 3. Ironic.
