I consider myself a fan of the Alien film series, despite really only having seen the first two and Prometheus. I've seen reviews of the third and fourth films(which are trash) and Covenant, and so it's unfortunate to say that the film franchise really only has two good films. Seeing as how this was directed by a decent horror filmmaker, and had the aesthetic of the first two, I was excited to watch it.
To start things off, let's get the obvious out of the way. The special effects are the stars of the show. I adore the use of practical effects, which really help make this feel like an Alien film and not just a CGI shit show like the prequels. Another thing that's really good are the performances. Cailee does a really good job as the main character, but of course David steals the show as Andy. Isabela is also phenomenal as a scared-out-of-her-wits young woman who goes through so much in the film. The others are good too.
The writing is unfortunately where the film misses. It definitely has some highlights, such as the fact that it's a simple story, like the first one. No craziness about creation like the prequels, or weird shit like the third and fourth films. And it actually does a good job at creating a good reason for the characters to want to enter a derelict spaceship in the first place. However, as everyone else has stated, the overuse of nostalgia is what really drags the writing down. Ok, we get it, we're watching an Alien film, you don't have to beat us over the head with that fact. There was literally no reason for using Ian's likeness for the android. And the thing is, nostalgia isn't really overused. Off the top of my head, I can only think of three moments of nostalgia bait. One is the aforementioned use of Ian for the android. Second is when Andy says "I prefer the term artificial human myself" and third is when he also says "Get away from her, you bitch". But it's so obvious they're trying to bait the audience with those moments. If it had just been one of the two quotes it would have been fine(but preferably not the iconic second quote). But no, it has to have all three. Plus, there's always gotta be that one character that's a dick for no reason and is the cause of all the issues. I forgot his name in the film but goddamn was I glad when he died via acid burning. Also, I have to mention the fact that at many instances, the aliens corner Cailee, but take forever roaring or whatever to kill her, allowing her to get saved. Oh, and the ending is really good, I don't get why people complain about it. It's an Alien staple to have a surprise climactic ending.
3.7/5, it was so close to being a straight up great standalone sequel. Still the third best film in the franchise, though.
