I cannot believe that Disney did this to Mulan. Obviously the first movie from 1998 adapted the historical Chinese story, but the fact that it was animated made it excusable. But with this film, we saw an implausible story of a superhero that had magical chi powers. How ridiculous that it is 2020 and the only way we can imagine a women's strength and intelligence to only be from magical witch direction and a superpower that she was born with.
Mulan was an ordinary woman who had to work hard and smart to get to the point where she could help save China. After that hard work and determination she becomes the hero. Not some stupid power that she was born with.
The most disappointing aspect of this movie has to be the fact that when Mulan is training for the army it was made very clear that Mulan would fail as a solider, only then does she embrace the strength and fighting abilities of her superpower. Making it clear that the only way a woman could make it in the army is if they have such a power.
In close second, it would have to be the absolute ridiculous storyline that was adapted for this film. So, Mulan takes the place for her father, but it is made clear that at training anyone who didn't succeed would be sent home? Or the random form changing witch that is a part of the story? They can add a witch but they didn't add the cricket or Mushu?
I genuinely don't understand what Disney was thinking when they created this movie. But I am extremely disappointed.
