Ms. Lepore’s book is thorough, insightful and deftly nuanced. She’s a great storyteller, letting the interesting and sometimes untold characters of history bring themselves to light.
Of course, those who want history to conform to their views will be uncomfortable with parts of this book. But they’re going to cower from anything that accurately portrays issues they’re uncomfortable attempting to understand.
I thoroughly enjoyed the introduction to the revolutionary period through the eyes of Benjamin Lay, an interesting character more people should know.
