I would like to start off by mentioning that I was fortunate to follow Mac Miller’s career since 2009. Longtime fans would agree when I say that he had a very unique perspective on life, which was on display through his art and music. I believe he was neither overrated nor underrated; he was in his own lane, being a white rapper in a trap, club-focused hip-hop/rap industry. Mac Miller’s progression and evolution, in addition to his vision, were impressive and evident, which didn’t meet its full potential due to his untimely passing.
Balloonerism by Mac Miller is a proper addition to an already strong discography, building on similar themes and creative space as Faces (2014). This era/period marked the trajectory of his career and creative direction, which would shape his future releases.
Recency bias aside, this project is easily in my top 3 releases by Mac Miller. Balloonerism captures Miller’s essence with its jazz/soul influence and psychedelic sound mixed with his unique singing vocals, which became his bread and butter. This project is a must-listen from start to finish.
