One thing to know about the Anime fanbase: they are exactly the same as gamers and Trekkies. It takes little to no effort to displease them, and most of the time they will purposefully hate everything that comes their way. Odd bunch. That said, while every opinion has weight, a balanced appeal is worth more. After all, they will probably watch it multiple times, anyway.
Anime looks different from live action. Each have elements that the other cannot, but its easy to see this adaption is a passion project. Very well done. The music, the undertones, its all just as bittersweet. Many of the changes were necessary, but some not so much. And that's okay.
Totally fine they didn't sexualize Faye, but I think the audience could have handled the rest of her. She was many things, but not a crass teenage-lookalike.
Where is Jet's ship, by the way?
Spike was pulled off very well, but missing some key elements. He didn't talk like everyone else, and we did see that here, but it wasn't consistent, not so much as Shakir's performance and script management.
A marvelous job was done with Vicious. Note: his character in the anime' was the typical anime' antagonist with no real substance, so adding a drop to that character would have made die hard fans squirm.
Anyway, 4/5 for doing such a wonderful job, but not staying consistent when they have already done so much to mirror the beloved series. Its going to be difficult for people to enjoy this--especially Americans, simply because the tones are just completely removed from everything else out there--pop music, sex appeal and super heroes.
