I know this is an historical drama... But there were so many needless inaccuracies. As someone who knows the story of Napoleon and his Empire, at times I was thinking to myself "I'm confused, this didn't happen..?"..
Josephine was for the most part acted well, however there was too much of her in this film. At times it felt like we were running over the same ground again and again with her. And scenes snapped back and forth from one part of history to another.. Anyone who isn't familiar with Napoleon's life would be very confused.
Napoleon himself is not charismatic, he's passed off as a horny, grumpy.. beast. Which is not who he was, he may have been that to the established order, but he was extremely charismatic, and a genius. He revolutionised warfare for the period. None of that genius is shown. Most battles have him standing there saying "Fire, Cavalry, Charge".. None of what made Napoleon great, came through in this Movie.
Other points, the portrayal of the Emperors meetings with Napoleon aside from Alexander of Russia are bad. In reality they all disliked him, he was upsetting the order of Europe and had defeated and taken land from them. E.G After the battle of Austerlitz (or it's weird depiction of such in this film) Napoleon comes off as if he's being kind and merciful for giving peace to Austria. Not mentioning the fact that France ultimately humiliated Austria in the peace settlement... Same with Wellington, in this he is portrayed as a pompous general who hates and wants Napoleon dead. In reality, Wellington whilst an aristocrat was liked by his men and he ultimately respected Napoleon for his genius.
The one part of this film that shines is the visuals. I don't think I've seen a film in the modern day display soldiers or environments this well in relation to a historical setting. And the viscera in some shots truly makes you feel how horrifying getting hit with a cannonball or grapeshot can be.
TLDR:
I didn't want perfect historical accuracy, I understand this is a drama based on Napoleons history. But some of the changes make no sense and result in worse storytelling when the reality of the story was far better. Some characters have way too much screen time and don't contribute enough to the story (Josephine). And while we see fragments of Napoleons life, this isn't Napoleon. He was a genius, charismatic and inspired loyalty in his men. This Napoleon is grumpy, seems to fall into positions of power rather than seizing them, wins battles by telling men to fire and advance rather than showing the audience his tactical genius and is apparently always horny. The one good thing I can say about this film is the visuals are fantastic.
