It's a visually beautiful film that offers an intriguing look into an intimate relationship. The visual and emotional aspects of the film are what give it the sense that it was well-planned and made with care.
However, where it falls short is in growth, climax, and any other basic progression. An emotionally stunted protagonist leads to an emotionally stunted journey, wherein characters and plot developments only appear for a brief second before disappearing. Everything returns to the initial concept of a son having issues with his father, which begs the question as to why any of this film was set in space to begin with.
All in all, I'm still trying to puzzle the film out, specifically in regard to how anyone thought such a simple plot point could be dragged out for 2.5 hrs. My favourite films are thought-provoking and often melancholic (such as Spike Jonze's "Her") but this film fails to meet any satisfying level of meaning or creativity.
