Steven Universe: The Show That Kids Should Be Watching
In 2013, cartoon network artist Rebecca Sugar aired the first episode of Steven Universe™. What first seemed like a normal cartoon soon took a turn for those that are different than most people. It was a major shock to the fans when they learned that Rebecca Sugar was a non-binary female. What non-binary means is that the gender does not identify as a male or a female. Not only that but some of the characters were also special. Padparadscha is a character that has delayed future vision, in a way she has a disability. Garnet the leader of the crystal gems, turns out to be a fusion of the gems Ruby and Sapphire. These two a were shown to have a romantic and sexual relationship. The question is, should kids be watching a show like this.
The first things when Steven Universe™ is talked about is LGBT. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Why is this so important to the show in the first place. Well fusion is one of the main themes in this show. A fusion is when one or more gems come together and form a completely new entity. This is like relationships in real life. Some relationships are based on working assets, some with close friendships, and of course the romantic and sexual relationships. The showing of a romantic and sexualy relationship in a kids show is important. Steven Universe™ shows kids that LGBT relationships do exist in this world. Studies show that 4.5% of adults in America identify as LGBT. (NBC)
Another thing that Steven Universe™ brings up in conversation is children disabilities. Studies show that 13% of children in public schools have disabilities.(HRW) So having a character like this in Steven Universe™ shows that it’s okay to have disabilities. Research shows have also shown that 17% of disabled children are american indian or Alaskan native. And this is only in America. (CDC)
Some people say that “Steven Universe™ is inappropriate for children and that children should not be exposed to LGBT and children with disabilities.” To that many fans of the show will disagree greatly. Children that are aware that LGBT and children with disabilities do exist it helps them get a better understanding that everyone even LGBT and children with disabilities deserve to be apart of our society.
If LGBT people don’t matter in our society then why do we have Pride Month. Pride month is when, every June the LGBT community celebrate the fact that they are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. Some of the ways pride month is celebrated by concerts, paradises, picnics, and parties. The concept of pride month has attracted millions of people even if they aren't LGBT. The Steven Universe™ fan-base has drawn the characters in rainbow outfits and carrying rainbow flags.
In conclusion, I believe that Steven Universe™ is an appropriate show for children to watch. With all the reasons that I had stated, I can come to say that Steven Universe™ is a show that will teach kids how to love and respect one another. I am super thankful that this show was brought to the world. thank you Rebecca Sugar.
