Used to be a great family show that touches on societal issues and current affairs through the lives of the residents of hillside. I've been watching since about 2008 and it was good back then but has gone way down in the last 4 or 5 years. It honestly gets dumber by the day. I no longer watch it religiously but might tune in just to see how it is. This used to be the show to relax to at the end of the day, but now it's just too bad. I feel like the main problems may be "Americanizing" the show by following tropes that are often present in american series. Another problem is no clear idea of who characters are. So many characters act out of character. Like for eg Aggie stealing a baby is where the show is at the moment. That is totally out of character??? Characters also don't undergo much development, they're either one dimensional or do things so randomly, you can't even describe the character. Yet another issue is the stupid storylines- francois and his cult come to mind. I wouldn't say the old 7de laan wasn't dom at times, but it was endearing and iconic. The old 7de laan felt good to watch because of the hillside comraderie between the characters, the new one isn't really about that anymore. The new 7de laan is just dom. I gave it 3 starts because it's so dom it's actually funny at times, and also, watching 7de laan really helped me to learn, speak and understand afrikaans.
