First off, going into it, you need to have an open mind, throwaway any inclinations of what a Broadway musical is “supposed to be”. The first couple of songs are ostensibly anachronistic to a few, but this is a story of America then, told by America now. Many of the solo performances are incredible. The ensemble performances are spectacular. It starts off with a rap and R&B ensemble performance (which is very good), but it also has many “Broadway jazz sound” numbers that traditionalists can enjoy (also very good). This combination of congruent musical genres gives this show a fresh, modern feel. This is what a Broadway musical CAN be. And remember, this work is not intended to be a undergrad college course in history. It’s entertainment. If one goes into this musical with those prefaces, you will be thoroughly entertained.
