As a longtime reader of L.M. Alcott, Little Women in particular, this version is overall the best ensemble cast, including the first version with Katherine Hepburn and the most recent PBS version. I particularly liked the frequent use of Orchard House as a backdrop. It is difficult to say which individual performance was the best, but that signifies a true ensemble performance where no one actor dominates. Susan Sarandon seems to internalize the role of Marmee in a way which other actresses have failed to do, combining maternal concern with heartfelt delivery of her social responsibility advice. I return to this film again and again, especially when feeling that the world is a sad place.
