The movie feels like it was made for the 7 minute preview we got before release.
To clarify, the 7 minute preview showed a pretty accurate event in the lore and draws anyone who knows the game into it. After that however, the movie goes off the rails in terms of the plot. While that's not necessarily an issue for people unfamiliar with the franchise, there is still the lingering issues of rushed plot, either flat characters or comical over acting. While it was a treat too see Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, he is sadly consigned to the role of "plot device". The addition of characters that never existed in the franchise is also a bit dissapointing considering the rich character roster that has grown with the franchise since its beginning.
The visual effects were a stronger point. Leaning on the fantastic side of thing, with plenty of bloody visuals and fatality references that will bring you a few moments of amusement.
Overall, Mortal Kombat failed to impress me. The main protagonists flat personality and the overall pace and plot of the movie felt lacking. Which is sad considering how much references material they had to fall back on. It feels like the director didn't so much make THE Mortal Kombat movie, as much as the movie they wanted with a Mortal Kombat "coat of paint."
While I didn't enjoy the movie, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. You never know. You might enjoy it! But I can't say I'd recommend it.
