Francis Itani's book Deafening made me aware of the Canadian town of Desoronto, it's school for the deaf and the first world war soldiers coming home with them sick with the Spanish Flu. I was shocked that I had not known of this tragedy although I was 63 and had gone to Community College and University. I was mesmerized by the story.
