Shinoda's album under his own name was a work to aid processing Chester's death. At a few points in the album Shinoda marks off where the song or video is occurring in a timeline after the shock. Although the timeline is never fully identified within the album, the listener is left with the vague sense of the passage of time from track to track without a clear progression in facing the trauma. Instead, track 2 makes clear that the theme will be facing down multiple facets that don't just come up once but "over and over again" in the grieving process. Each song captures a mood as well as a train of thought that people experience when processing loss. Shinoda does an excellent job capturing the desire for optimism without pressing into a false positiveness that rings hallow. It's a truly honest exploration of loss that passes through multiple genres and guest tracks while being united by the purpose of the journey the album represents. It's something Shinoda should be long remembered for: another complete album rather than an assembly of good songs.
