I watched Veere De Wedding. Quite entertaining. Quite a few of the 'high-brow' crowd have dissed the film, I think what they couldn't stomach is an unabashed female centric sex comedy which is, just like its male counterpart, liberal in the sexual references and bawdy language. In that way the film, even with any of its flaws, is a significant departure from convention and its makers must be lauded for it. I'm heartened to find there is a growing audience who likes this new addition to the 'wedding' genre. I found it amusing to read certain audience reviews on facebook and other social media platforms with disapproving references to certain 'shock value' scenes - by the way, I found the film's plot to have justified these admirably and so disagree with the criticism. There are also some who have said the film lacks a plot or central message
I disagree. The plot is that it doesn't have to be about the man all the time. As Sonam rightly put it in the film, unfortunately even today a woman's life is judged by whether or not she has managed to bag a husband, no matter what her other accomplishments are. The film isn't essentially about a wedding, it's about family ties, and friendship. It tries to break stereotypes although it's not always successful, but the fact that most viewers have given it a thumbs up tells me that more people want to watch female-centric comedies.
I also loved the tongue-in-cheek, slightly self-deprecating yet endearing look at the 'opulent Punjabi wedding' universe. A good ensemble cast and perhaps that's what supports the film along with the script. And of course, what Indian musical would be a success without a hit soundtrack?
