The sheer plausibility and more importantly the timelessness of this plausibility is what makes it so different from other Dystopian novels. Written in 1985, this book remains eerily relevant to this day. We're still fighting the war against women's autonomy, patriarchy, institutionalized racism and totalitarian governments. The story serves as a harsh mirror to how we view our privilege. This is a disturbing book because unlike the TV series, the violence is not explicit. Offred's detailed ramblings of immediate surroundings including smell, texture, visuals all serve to imply the larger picture is too horrific to think about too much.
This book will crawl into your psyche.
10/10 would recommend.
